Considering Window Replacement? A Few Dos and Don’ts (Part 1)

Many homeowners seem to think of window replacement as somewhat of a last resort. They’d often much rather pay for repairs than shell out for brand new windows. However, it’s important to keep in mind that new windows can lower energy bills, improve insulation, and even improve your home’s resale value.

In fact, depending on where you live, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that you can save up to $501 a year by replacing old single-pane windows with new Energy Star approved models. But before you choose just any window replacement company, it’s important to take the right steps and have a vision in mind for your home.

Here are a few window replacement dos and don’ts to keep in mind before you make any final decisions.

DO: Explore your options

Before you decide to get the same type of windows previously installed in your home, take some time to explore your window design and material options. There are a number of styles that can add significant aesthetic and financial value to your home, and while many homeowners don’t realize it, modern window technology has come a long way. Bay windows, bow windows, slider windows are just a few examples. You can even opt for custom windows. Similarly, you’ll have to choose between wood and vinyl for the preferred material for your window frames: according to Remodeling Magazine’s annual “Cost Vs Value Report”, the average cost of vinyl window replacement is $11,319; wood window replacement comes in slightly higher at $12,229. Take your time in researching your options and/or discussing them with a window replacement specialist.

DON’T: Neglect the idea of storm windows

Before making any final decisions regarding window style or material, take a moment to determine whether or not your home could benefit from the addition of storm windows. Storm windows provide significant protection from the elements, from high winds to hail and even natural disasters. They’re definitely worth investing in if you live in a tornado- or disaster-prone area.

Ultimately, a typical family spends about a third of its annual heating and cooling budget — roughly $350 — on air that leaks into or out of the house through unintended gaps and cracks, and your home’s windows are the primary culprit! For this reason, keeping these window replacement dos and don’ts in mind can help you make the best decisions regarding both your home’s energy needs, design, and your budget. Keep an eye out for the next post, where we’ll discuss some more in-depth dos and don’ts that can help you choose the right windows for your home.
